Now once the colonel had been satisfied
That every officer could be relied
Upon and knew the situation well,
He then concluded, "I am pleased to tell
You all that we have made a better start
Than I had thought we would. As you depart,
Remember that our victory depends
Much more on how our friendliness extends
To build relationships with those who live
Within this town, than on our punitive
Capacities to overwhelm the foe.
Insurgencies can have no hope to grow
Without a base in the community.
By robbing them of this no enemy
Will have a chance to fight against our force.
So everyone must now pursue the course
Of building strong relationships each day
Amongst these villagers, who will repay
Our efforts with an open attitude
Reflecting thankfulness and gratitude.
