Stanza 6

But as the night is drawing to a close
Upon the door a pounding starts and grows.
And every man awakes in abject fear
Not knowing if new terrorists appear
Or if their ancient enemies have sent
A group of gunmen on destruction bent
Against the peaceful family inside,
Who have no means to fight and can not hide.
For surely any friend would make the choice
To let his comrades recognize his voice
Instead of causing such an awful fright
By banging on the door so late at night.
Yet as the knocks continue loud and long
And nothing indicates that ought is wrong,
The elder man calls out to those outside
Requesting that they be identified.
Then as the answer penetrates the door
Their apprehension leaves their very core.
"It is the miracle the sign of God!
Who comes from Samarra, his native sod."
