Stanza 29

29

The sergeant at the gate remained aloof.
Before admitting them established proof
Must be provided to allay the fear
That those who wished to enter might appear
Quite innocent when in reality
They want to penetrate security
And perpetrate an act of violence.
Preventing this, a plan for the defense
Was implemented by the NCO.
He took their names and then he let them know
To wait until the colonel in command
Was ready to receive the ones who planned
To talk to him. The sergeant then observed
The men to see if they became unnerved
When forced to wait outside in idleness,
And while he watched for evidence of stress
He sent the information up the line.
Then after fifteen minutes with no sign
That they were discomfited by the wait
The men were granted access through the gate.
